Oweh’s Breakout Season Earns All-SEC Honors

by Tim Branstetter

Kentucky junior guard Otega Oweh has officially made his mark in the Southeastern Conference. On Monday, league coaches recognized his standout season by naming him to the All-SEC Second Team—the first all-conference honor of his career.

Oweh has been the Wildcats’ most consistent scoring threat, leading the team with 16.2 points per game during the regular season. He started the year on fire, scoring in double figures in each of Kentucky’s first 26 games—an achievement unmatched by any other player in the SEC. He has hit double digits 29 times overall and topped the 20-point mark on 11 occasions, including eight times in conference play.

His scoring prowess isn’t the only area where he’s excelled. The Newark, New Jersey, native has been a defensive force, leading Kentucky with 48 steals (1.5 per game) and recording multiple steals in 16 contests. Across the board, this has been a career year for Oweh, setting personal bests in points (16.2), rebounds (4.8), assists (1.6), steals (1.5), and blocks (0.5) per game.

Among his standout performances, Oweh’s 28-point effort against his former team, Oklahoma, was arguably his best. He scored Kentucky’s final 18 points, including the game-winner with six seconds remaining, then sealed the victory with a crucial blocked shot. In the Wildcats’ regular-season finale at Missouri, he poured in 22 points—20 of them after halftime. His second career double-double came at Vanderbilt, where he posted 21 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Joining Oweh on the All-SEC Second Team are Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard, South Carolina’s Collin Murray-Boyles, Tennessee’s Chaz Lanier, and Texas’ Tre Johnson.

The Wildcats now turn their focus to the SEC Tournament, where they will open play Thursday night at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET against the winner of the Oklahoma-Georgia matchup. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
